GSDRC: 25 years of advancing evidence for global policy

For 25 years, the Governance and Social Development Resource Centre, based at the University of Birmingham, has worked to bridge the gap between research and policy on global challenges.

Through our flagship research helpdesk, other rapid evidence services, and wider partnerships, we have supported governments, international organisations, and development agencies with timely, policy-relevant research and analysis. Our work has helped inform decision-making and practice around the world, by provided the right evidence at the right time on issues of governance, social development, humanitarian response, conflict, and development cooperation.

To mark this milestone, we are reflecting on the role of evidence in policymaking, the contribution of research to policy processes, and the evolving methods and technologies used to synthesise evidence and deliver rapid evidence services. As part of this process, we have invited current and former GSDRC staff, interns, and affiliates to share their reflections on the projects, partnerships, challenges, and achievements that have shaped the Centre, and to offer their perspectives on GSDRC’s past, present, and future.

Watch this space for new reflections and additional materials, which we will be adding over the coming months.

As we enter our next 25 years, we continue to build on our established areas of work while developing projects and initiatives focused on aid and development cooperation, political inequality and state capture, multi-hazard risks and resilience, AI-enabled evidence synthesis, and strengthening evidence-informed policymaking. Explore our latest projects, publications, and news to find out more about the Centre’s work.
